Text Extrude tutorial - Page 2 - Alpha Channels + FreeForm
By Chris Bobotis
On page 1 of this tutorial we created an animation using a solid and a series of masks. This technique has created an Alpha channel that although the Alpha Channel is recognized and can be used by FreeForm AE, it will not be necessary for this animation. In this section we will create a solid that we will strategically postion underneath the comp we just created and add an animated blur to our sequence.
Step 4
Open the ''2_Mask + Soild Comp'' and place "1_Mask Anim Comp". Now
create a new solid and color it black. Make sure to position this under the
"1_Mask Anim Comp" layer. This in essence will generate a darkest
area of the animation that will ''adhere'' to the FreeFormed'' layer in the
upcoming ''3_FreeForm AE Comp'' layer.
If you feel I am speaking in tongues, you should consider taking a peak at the ''Baby Steps'' Tutorial before moving on. If not, carry on...
Step 5
Select the "1_Mask Anim Comp" layer and add the After Effects ''Fast
Blur'' filter. Effect > Blur and Sharpen > Fast Blur. Then at frame
0 set the Blurriness to 36 and keyframe this. Now go to frame 02:15 and bring
the blur down to 3.

Create a RAM preview, the animation should look something like this (see below):
That is it for this section. Let's move on to the fun stuff :)
